Stroud actor Keith Allen will play serial killer John Cooper in a new crime drama.

Allen will star alongside Luke Evans in ITV's The Pembrokeshire Murders.

The three-part mini-series will tell the true story of Dyfed Powys police's attempt to solve the double murders of Helen and Richard Thomas and Gwenda and Peter Dixon in the 1980s.

In 2006, newly promoted Detective Superintendent Steve Wilkins (Evans) decided to reopen both cases.

Cooper was discovered to be the murderer after a stint in prison for a series of burglaries and significant developments in DNA examination.

Footage of Cooper's appearance on TV gameshow Bullseye a month before the Dixons' were killed was used as evidence against him.

The drama is adapted from the true crime book Catching the Bullseye Killer, written by Wilkins and ITV journalist Jonathan Hill.

It will be made by World Productions, the company behind BBC smash hits Line of Duty and Bodyguard.

Filming for the series begins this month.
