WHEN people retire these days, many people like to go quietly.
It wasn’t always that way and looking back at history through the pages of the Standard it seems that it was quite often a newsworthy event whenever someone retired.
Presentations, dinners and even the odd ball were held in Cirencester in honour of long service to a Company, RAF Kemble; the Post Office; or other local organisation.
Retiring teachers and headmasters frequently featured in the Standard’s reports, as well as street-cleaners and bakers - no profession or job was excluded.
