Tetbury’s Army Cadet Platoon -- B Company, The Rifles -- has now been recognised by The Honourable Company of Gloucester as the ‘A Team’ when it comes to service in the community.

One of the aims of the Honourable Company is to encourage and reward outstanding public service and it was work that Tetbury cadets carried out to Support the Gloucestershire branch of SSAFA and forces’ veterans in the county that put the spotlight on their award-winning endeavours.

For some years the town’s army cadets have been important supporters of armistice day in Tetbury.

They have collected funds for the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal, paraded in Gloucester for Armed Forces Day and also assisted with other events such as Tetbury’s annual Woolsack races.

In 2019 the platoon decided to increase its commitment to SSAFA, the country’s longest established forces charity still further.

The highlight of its endeavours took place in July, on the hottest day of the year, when it raised £1,500 for the charity’s funds by walking overnight for more than 60 miles, from the cadet county headquarters in Gloucester to the seafront at Weston Super Mare.

That event and their other activities raised their profile with the Honourable Company, as well as the town.

In return Mrs Helen Lovatt, Warden of the Honourable Company and several of its other office holders recently turned out to recognise their drive and community commitment by presenting them with an award certificate and cheque for £500 for their platoon funds for being the Army Cadets Platoon of the year.
