Police have made a statement after a man was followed by a large group in Yate.

A man who lives in Yate posted a warning on social media after he was followed in the area late at night.

The man, who was walking towards Yate Shopping Centre from the Brimsham area on Goose Green Way, took to Facebook after he was followed by a large group.

In the post he said: "Just a warning to anyone in Yate and out late.

"I've just been followed home at about 11:30pm by about 6-9 people.

"The first person was banging two very large metal poles together as he walked towards me, then about five more came from side roads and hedges.

"Then another three appeared out of nowhere, the whole time the metal banging didn't stop until I tried flagging down cars, yet no one stopped, one even sped off so must have seen it. Police have been informed, but please stay safe."

Now though the police have issued a statement on the incident confirming they searched the area.

"We were called at 12.04am on Tuesday 18 February by a man reporting he was followed by men, dressed in black, carrying poles and issuing threatening words," a spokesman said.

"A search of the area surrounding Goose Green Way was undertaken, but no offenders could be found.

"Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101 and give the call-handler reference number 5220039782."
