Traders at Bolton Market are helping shoppers to beat supermarket queues by offering home delivery.

Nearly 20 food stalls are taking orders for home deliveries or collection services as the borough enters its second week of coronavirus lockdown.

Fruit, vegetables, meat, and groceries are all available from the stall holders, who are able to remain open as usual until further notice.

Daniel Harvey, owner of Bannisters Fruit and Veg, has been inundated with orders since launching the service.

He said: “I hope this will do the market good, I’ve seen a lot of new customers even though the market has been quiet because people aren’t coming out.

“When this is over, I hope they’ll show some loyalty and come back to us because we provided deliveries when the supermarkets couldn’t.

“I’m not turning anyone down, we don’t know what’s happening with the market in the long term and I’ve got four staff with families to think about.

“We’re happy to do it, we’re here to provide a service and we’ll do that for as long as we can.”

Supermarket chains have previously announced strict policies to prevent panic-buying, with several launching special shopping hours for the elderly and vulnerable.

It has become increasingly difficult for shoppers to access delivery slots, and limits on product lines are in place for those who can access the online services.

People across the country are also being urged to stay at home when possible, with only a few limited reasons to head outside.

Although shopping for necessities like food and medicine is allowed, shoppers have been told that trips should be as infrequent as possible, with people encouraged to limit their shopping trips to once a week at most.

Each individual trader offers different delivery services, with some stretching their areas out as far as Blackburn and Wigan.

A full list of traders offering delivery, and how to contact them to arrange an order, is available on Bolton Markets' Facebook page.

All orders made for collection can be picked up between 9-5pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Orders can be brought out into the car park for customers, eliminating the need for more vulnerable people to even leave their car in order to collect fresh food.

Most traders will offer free delivery on any orders, although some require customers to reach a minimum order total to offer free delivery.

The delivery services have been very popular, with most traders unable to offer any deliveries until next week at the earliest.

Butchers are offering customised packs of meat to ensure everyone is able to get the food they want.

A variety of deals are also available, and can be seen on the trader's Facebook pages.

There are no current plans to shut the market to visitors or change the opening times.

The food hall at the site is also open for business each day, although visitors will have to make sure they’re practicing social distancing.
