Avon and Somerset Police have warned against unnecessary travel with the south west set for good weather this weekend.

Both Chief Constable Andy Marsh and Police Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens urged residents to avoid the temptation to get outside.

Speaking during a Facebook Live video this afternoon Andy Marsh said: "What I would say we are worried about... is that it's coming up to Easter, Sunday is going to be a nice day weather wise. We really would want to discourage people from travelling.

"This is not the time to drive through Bristol, through Somerset to get to holiday homes to go for trips out on the beach, to go for picnics.

"This is a relatively short period of time, we know that it's difficult, but we would ask people to do their best to carrying on doing what they have done so far too comply with the guidelines."

While the vast majority are complying, since the police set up an online tool for people to share suspected breaches of the restrictions there has been more than 1,000 reports. The tool is available at avonandsomerset.police.uk/report/breach-of-covid-19-restrictions

Sue Mountstevens added: "As the weather improves and we get towards Easter and bank holidays, more people may be thinking shall I get into the car but it really is not the time to get complacent.

"We are still getting horrendous figures of those contracting Covid-19 and also dying sadly. These rules apply to all of us and we have to take them in the spirit so please stay at home."

Saturday is expected to feel much warmer than today, with temperatures higher still on Sunday and heading towards the 20C mark.
