A SCHOOLGIRL received some heartwarming words of advice from a 91-year-old lady to “never look down, and always look up” after becoming pen pals.

Caitlin Coughtrey decided to write to pensioner Hilary Robson after being sent an activity pack from a charity.

The ten-year-old, from Southend, who loves writing, decided to start her letter by telling Hilary how she loved her name, and wrote about the nicknames her family give her, as well as what her “welcoming” and “warm” home life is like.

Caitlin is a member of Turning Tides youth club, run by Southend Association of Voluntary Services (SAVS).

The charity’s youth clubs are funded by BBC Children in Need.

Caitlin’s mum, Hannah Patterson, 31, said: “Hilary’s letter hasn’t come through the door yet but I saw it online when BBC Children in Need posted it on their Facebook page and it brought a tear to my eye.

“Caitlin started going to the youth club around six months ago to boost her confidence around new people.

“She is so outgoing now and will have you in hysterics.

“The club take the children out to places like Rollacity, they do team-building activities, and crafts.”

Hilary starts her reply letter by revealing her age, comically saying she is “ancient” and an “antique”.

She continues by giving an insight into her interesting life, including how her mum was a welder and how due to testing times with little money, she had to ration books, but despite that they were all happy.

Hilary goes on to say: “Life is like that Caitlin, up one time, down another, always look up and never look down, is our family’s motto and you’ll survive.”

She finished off by wishing Caitlin to “have a happy day, every day”.
