AN 11-year-old boy from Dursley is cycling over 150 miles to raise funds for the Cam and Dursley community.

Will Coulsting plans to ride the equivalent distance from his home in Dursley, to his grandmother’s house in Harlech, Wales but he will do all the cycling in the local area.

Will came up with the idea after becoming fed up with lockdown and not being able to see his grandmother and his friends.

He said he does keep in touch with everyone, but it’s not the same as meeting up in person.

The Cam Hopton pupil, who will be starting at Rednock in September, talked to his mum who worked with him to set up a sponsorship page to help the GL11 Community Hub.

He said: “ I set myself this challenge because usually we would be going to my grandma’s house which is 151 miles away from my house.

“I will be doing it over 13 days, which is 18.6 kilometres a day.

“I had nothing to do and was missing my friends.

“After thinking about how hard it was for me as an ordinary but pretty lucky 11 year old I wondered how hard it must be for people struggling during the crisis - especially those who can’t buy food.”

Will aimed to complete his challenge over 13 days and today (Saturday) is his twelfth day of cycling.

The distance he has ridden so far would have taken him to Powys Castle, if he were actually making the journey from Dursley to his grandmother’s house in Harlech.

He said he will keep up riding his bike every day once he has finished the challenge, but he won’t ride so far.

GL11 are the Covid-19 community response team for the GL11 area and are raising money for those in financial need during the crisis and for a hardship fund to offer subsidised meal deliveries and other essential items.

They are also working in partnership with Severn Vale Community Kitchen to deliver very affordable healthy meals to people at home. They are the official GL11 postcode Covid-19 community response team.

Will is hoping to raise £500.
