PROTESTORS will be gathering in Stroud today in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

The peaceful protest will be starting outside the Sub Rooms at 1pm in solidarity with protests in the US.

Resident Polly Stratton organised a gathering yesterday outside the Subs with a few friends, and decided to hold one today too.

Everyone is welcome to attend, but anyone joining in is asked to observe social distancing measures and to wear a mask.

Further protests are planned outside the Sub Rooms tomorrow, and in Stroud on Saturday. Details are to be confirmed.

The protests are part of a campaign against police brutality and in support of the fight for racial equality and justice.

Protests started after George Floyd, an African-American in the US, was killed after Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin held his knee to Mr Floyd's neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds.

This was despite Mr Floyd's pleas for his life and repeatedly saying 'I can't breathe'.

Officer Chauvin has been charged with murder in the third degree but has not yet been prosecuted.

Mr Floyd's is one of many cases which have spurred the movement.
