PUBS across the country reopened their doors for the first time on Saturday after closing under Government restrictions in March.

Jubilant landlords poured their first pints in three months as lockdown eased further.

New measures were put in place in all pubs to ensure compliance with social distancing measures to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus.

With Super Saturday being a test run for the new measures, some landlords found they will have to adapt them more to ensure customers and staff remain safe.

Paul Davies, landlord at Stanshawes Court Hotel in Yate had a exceptionally busy first day back.

“We were so pleased to be able to welcome our customers back,” he said.

“After day one, it is apparent we will have to bring in complete table service and a booking service.

“We will need to take on extra staff and we have ordered more card terminals. These measures though, will reassure our customers that they are safe and that Stanshawes is a great place to eat and drink.”

James Britton-Gale, landlord of the Squire in Chipping Sodbury, the Bell at Old Sodbury and the Swan in Nibley, reopened all three pubs on Saturday.

“The safety staff and customers remained our main focus, and initial feedback suggests we managed to get the balance right, with customers feeling safe whilst still able to enjoy their experience with us,” he said. “Customers have been very understanding of the measures we’ve put in place to protect them and our staff.

“We would like to say a big thank you to all the staff that have returned to work.

“Whether drinking or dining, we would ask that customers try to book in advance, with live availability and booking on our websites.”

Brendon Byrne landlord at the Lamb in Iron Acton, added: “It has been lovely getting to see everyone again, as well as some new faces. We have had great guests, who have been really understanding with the new safety procedures.”

Avon and Somerset Police said: “Pubs may be reopening but it’s important everyone remembers the health crisis is not over.”
