A WOMAN has died after being struck by a train outside Telford late on Monday night.

It is believed the woman was involved in a collision with the train at Oakengates train station shortly before 10pm, after police had received calls concerned for the welfare of a woman at the station.

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said they had been called out to an incident.

She said: "At 9.35pm last night police received a report of concern for the welfare of a woman at Oakengates Train Station.

Officers attended to support British Transport Police who are now dealing with the incident."

However, Claire Brown, from West Midlands Ambulance Service, said the woman's death was confirmed on the scene by ambulance staff.

She said; "We were called to Oakengates Station, Station Road, Telford at 9.54pm to reports of a pedestrian who had been involved in a collision with a train.

"An ambulance and a paramedic officer attended the scene. Sadly one woman was confirmed deceased by ambulance staff."

Lines between Shrewsbury and other destinations were temporarily blocked but are now up-and-running.
