MPs and councillors from across the political divide in Gloucestershire have hit out at Jeremy Corbyn after he was suspended from the Labour Party following the publication of a report into anti-Semitism.

The former Labour leader has said he will contest his suspension which comes after the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s (EHRC) report into anti-Semitism in the party during his leadership.

The damning report found Labour responsible for unlawful acts of harassment and discrimination, but Mr Corbyn has denied he was part of the problem.

Stroud MP Siobhan Baillie accused Labour of ignoring the concerns of Jewish communities.

Responding to a tweet from Rachel Riley she said: "Campaigners against anti-Semitism were hounded and the Labour Party just carried on campaigning for Corbyn.

"They paraded him locally and nationally and ignored concerns raised by Jewish communities.

"It’s an awful situation that sadly won’t end with only one suspension."

Chas Townley, Stroud district councillor, said Jeremy Corbyn 'needs to accept responsibility'.

Responding to the EHRC report he said: "As I have predicted for some months a hard and unsettling read for UK Labour members.

"Jeremy Corbyn needs to accept responsibility for the environment that existed."

But the former Labour leader has said he “will strongly contest the political intervention to suspend” him from the party.

He tweeted: “I’ve made absolutely clear those who deny there has been an antisemitism problem in the Labour Party are wrong.

“I will continue to support a zero tolerance policy towards all forms of racism.”
