Business owners in Stroud have been reacting to the news that there will be a new national lockdown next week.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a month-long national lockdown for England.

The PM said the national lockdown will start at one second past midnight on Thursday, November 5, and will last until Wednesday, December 2.

Reacting to the news, Juliet Farrington, the manager of the independent women's clothing store Moonflower in Stroud, said: "It will obviously affect our sales massively, but if it has to happen it has to happen.

"The first lockdown was hard because we don't sell online, and we couldn't work enough with the products we did sell online not be furloughed.

"We have to do it but obviously it will hit our sales.

"At least if we come into December we'll still have a good month but it's going to hit us."

Samantha McKie and her family took over the Carpenters Arms in Stroud last year.

She said: "I would prefer to lockdown now with the view to opening and being able to run as a normal pub at Christmas.

"We have adapted very well and have got used to running the pub with the restrictions, but it's obviously a real worry because we need to know if there is going to be a similar thing to furlough because that was such a lifeline, but of course we don't know for sure what the announcement will be."

Samantha opened a shop at the Carpenters during the first lockdown and she plans to reopen it again regardless of next week's announcement.

"We will open a shop next week and we would have to do so to keep the money coming in during a lockdown.

"We had an outside shop last time which was extremely valuable."

She added: "I think another lockdown could be a disaster for small businesses but the hospitality and the beauty industry need our December trade."
