I welcome all the moves that the government and businesses are making to tackle climate change.
Climate change is a global problem though and I think it is very important to remember that the UK government has invested £4 billion in fossil fuel infrastructure in the global south since signing the Paris Agreement in 2016.
Despite claiming strong climate credentials the UK has invested hundreds of millions of pounds of UK aid in oil and gas power plants in Ghana, Bangladesh, Kenya and many other countries through its development bank CDC Group. It has also given billions in fossil fuel support through UK Export Finance.
Investments such as these will lock in high carbon emissions in the global south for generations to come.
To claim this is climate leadership is total hypocrisy.
Ahead of COP26 in Glasgow, the government should show solidarity with frontline communities by ending all UK support for fossil fuels and instead invest in a just transition to renewable energy.
