Forest Green’s game against Oldham was called off after just 57 minutes following thick fog descending upon the Innocent New Lawn on Saturday.

The game also looked in doubt prior to kick off after heavy snowfall covered the pitch but it was the rolling fog that made the game unplayable and after much deliberation, the officials made the decision to call the game off.

Despite the game being abandoned and needing to be rearranged, Forest Green looked lively and bounced back from their loss against Crawley last time out.

Nicky Cadden opened the scoring in the contest after he nicked the ball back from an Oldham defender and fired his shot under Ian Lawlor.

The Latics did manage to pull one back on the stroke of half time as Zak Dearnley capitalised on the worsening conditions and fired into Luke McGee’s bottom corner.

Despite the conditions making the game virtually unplayable and eventually leading to it being called off, Mark Cooper stressed that his side wanted to finish the match.

He said: “I can only speak for my players and staff, we wanted to play and prepared hard for the game.

“The pitch was perfectly playable but the referee wasn’t keen on playing as well.

“My only argument is, there’s no fans so we could have waited an hour to see what happens because no one’s in any rush - You can’t go out to the pub, can you?”

For the majority of the game that was played, Rovers dominated and the score line flattered Oldham somewhat which led to Cooper praising the performance of his side.

“We looked really powerful and energetic and our play looked quick,” he said.

“I was really pleased with them today - I asked for a reaction. They let themselves down on Tuesday but they were right back at it today and you could see a real effervescent, young team.”

Forest Green now have a two-week rest as their next game is on the 16th of January and Cooper admitted Rovers would be using that time to regain some fitness after a busy schedule.

“The players now have got two weeks to get in top physical shape,” he added. “I thought they looked in really good shape today but they’ve had a tough schedule and we want to get them back in the gym, back on the pitch and of course they’ll get a couple of days off here and there but it’s going to be a working two weeks.”

Forest Green could also be boosted by the return of Kane Wilson who has not featured for Cooper’s side since the start of December.

“Yes,” said Cooper when asked if the 20-year-old may return after the break. “Kane (Wilson) will train next Monday and we’ll get a good week into him and we’ll see how far away he is.”

Forest Green next host face Port Vale at the Innocent New Lawn on the 16th of January.
