POLICE have seized this electric scooter in High Street, Tredworth.
Electric scooters are currently classed as ‘powered transporters’ by the government and fall under the same laws and regulations that apply to all motor vehicles.
This means that it is illegal to use them on public roads, pavements, in cycle lanes and in pedestrian-only areas.
The only place a privately owned e-scooter can be used is on private land with the permission of the landowner.
Only official rental scooters available with the agreement of councils, such as those in Cheltenham and Gloucester can legally be used in cycle lanes.
To rent an e-scooter, users must be over 16 years old and have a valid or provisional driving licence.
Use of the scooters is part of a strictly monitored ‘geofenced’ trial area, which means they will stop if the riders try to access an area off limits.
In a tweet police said:
