A higher percentage of over 80s have received their first does of the Covid-19 vaccine in Gloucestershire than anywhere else in the country.

Latest NHS figures show 85.3 per cent of over 80s in the county have received their first jab.

This equates to 31,903 people, while 30,237 under 80s had also received their first dose by January 17.

The county has 72,000 people eligible in the first phase of the vaccination programme

Northamptonshire has the next highest percentage of over 80s vaccinated at 78.2 per cent.

In Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire 33,429 vaccines have been administered, equivalent to 70.6 per cent.

Stroud MP Siobhan Baillie has hailed the effectiveness of Gloucestershire’s vaccination programme.

“This latest data is testament to the unbelievable work our local vaccination programme has undertaken in Gloucestershire and I would like to thank everyone for what they have done to make this happen,” said Siobhan.

“In Stroud, I have spoken to many residents who have received the jab. The most vulnerable groups, including residents in care homes, are now feeling confident about becoming protected from Covid.

“This is not only a relief but an absolute necessity if we are to stop infections and lower fatalities, reopen our schools, end lockdown and get back to normal.

“This country is achieving a world leading vaccination programme and the government remains on track to vaccinate the top four groups - care home residents, over 70s, health and care workers and the clinically extremely vulnerable by mid - February.”
