Stroud had the lowest rate of Covid infections in the South West for the second week running, according to figures by Public Health England.

In the fortnight ending January 25, the town recorded less new infections than the other 16 areas reported in the region.

In the seven days ending Jan 18, Stroud had 143 Covid infections per 100,000 people, and in the week ending January 25, it had 126.

This means Stroud's rate of infection has decreased by just under 12% in the latest figures.

The news comes as 90% of people aged over 80 years old in Gloucestershire recieve a Covid vaccination.

NHS data shows 77,817 people had been given their first jab by January 24.

The data also shows 43,756 people aged between 16 and 79 across Gloucestershire had received a first vaccination dose.

This includes groups like those aged over 70, frontline health and care workers and the extremely clinically vulnerable.

The virus has killed more than 100,000 people in England and continues to put a huge strain on hospitals.

It is one year as of yesterday since the first case of Covid-19 was recorded in the UK.
