THESE wonderful old photographs of royal visits to Stroud are taken from Howard Beard’s collection.

He writes: George III came to Stroud in 1778 – hence the naming of King Street and George Street. Princess Elizabeth called briefly in March 1950 and, more recently, Princess Anne, Prince Charles and the Kents, with homes nearby, have been frequent visitors.

During the last war Queen Mary lived at Badminton with the Duke of Beaufort’s family and today’s Nostalgia article features images of some of her trips around the district.

Queen Mary was notoriously acquisitive: when she admired an item – often an antique – the owner usually felt obliged to surrender it to her. Lady Marling may have been such a victim. Consequently, people were known to hide special items before Her Majesty crossed the threshold!

Captured here by local photographers are some of the other visits the Queen made, where her collecting instinct may have had less scope for success.
