A SEVERELY neglected Great Dane who was 'dumped' in a park is raising money for the Gloucestershire rescue centre that saved his life.

Arthur, a Great Dane cross, was emaciated and struggling to walk when he was brought to the Cotswolds Dogs and Cats Home in March.

He had several infected pressure wounds, likely from lying on hard surfaces for long periods of time.

Although he can only walk short distances at the moment, he is doing a 5K May for the centre to raise money for his animal friends.

Haley Medlock from the centre said: "He has only completed 0.65km so far as he can only walk very short distances.

"His doggy friends may have to help him complete it at the end, but he will do what he can do. We wont push him, so he will be at his own pace."

Arthur, who is doing the walk with the centre’s staff, is still living at the rescue centre in Cambridge.

"He is still at the centre, bless him," said Haley.

"He was in a terrible way when he came to us."

The centre's team believe Arthur, 5, was neglected for a long time before he was abandoned.

Tash Williams, an animal care assistant at the charity said: "Knowing Arthur was abandoned and just left all alone makes me feel so sad as he is a big friendly giant who just wants all the affection he can get. He is a true big softie and anyone would be lucky to have him in their lives.”

Thanks to generous donations from the public, Arthur has been able to receive the medical care he needed and is now finally healthy enough to be rehomed.

"He is doing so much better now and is finally healthy enough to be looking for a forever home," said Haley.

"Ideally we would like someone local to the centre so we can continue to work with them and help him get better. He will need daily medication so his new owners will need to be happy to administer medication.

"He can be quite nervous with people, but he just needs a bit of trust and to build a bond with someone."
