A WOMAN has thanked people for helping her celebrate her 100th birthday.

Nellie Arnold was surprised with hundreds of cards at Oldbury House Care Home in Eastington yesterday (Thursday).

In a bid make Nellie's birthday extra special, care home staff had invited members of the community to send her a card, with the aim of reaching 100 cards.

The community took the call out to heart and so far the centenarian has received over 300 cards, including one from the postman himself.

And on top of all of cards, Nellie received lots flowers, balloons and gifts too.

Staff held a party for her at Oldbury House, which included visits from family members, an online chat with her daughter in America, a telegram from the Queen and a performance from an entertainer.

Maintenance staff at the home built Nellie a throne, by adapting one of the chairs and covering it in red velvet, and Nellie became 'queen for the day'.

Home manager Joanne Howells said: "Nellie had a fantastic day.

"Thank you to everyone in the local community, groups, local businesses and individuals far and wide that took the time and sent cards, flowers, balloons and presents to our birthday girl and helped her celebrate this monumental occasion.

"We smashed our goal of achieving 100 birthday cards and ended up receiving over 300.

"Thank you to everyone that has participated in making Nellie’s 100th birthday an amazing day.

"She has loved every bit of it."
