Hundreds of votes flooded into our offices to decide the best gym in Stroud and we finally have the answer.

Over the last month we asked readers to nominate the top six fitness facilities and then choose between them to crown the Stroud News and Journal Best Gym 2021.

In third places was Stratford Park Leisure Centre, in second came Fifth Dimension in Ebley, but the best gym in the district is Shorts Boxing Academy in Stonehouse.

“Boxing has been my passion for over a decade and it has always been my dream, to run my own club,” said Craig Short, who runs the club with his wife Carrie.

Stroud News and Journal:

“We have been blown away by all the support and would like to thank everyone who voted for us. “Also, a big thanks to the Stroud News and Journal, for running the competition and highlighting the importance of exercise and it's benefits.”

Craig and Carrie are both qualified England Boxing coaches and have run the academy voluntarily for three years, reinvesting all the money they make.

"I dedicate this award, to my wife Carrie, my four daughters Chloe, Chiara, Chamiya and Chaela, all our academy members and anyone struggling with mental health and disabilities.

“I would like to let them know they are not alone and the gym is a great place for them to improve all aspects of their lives. Boxing in particular is fantastic for building confidence and discipline, but most importantly to feel accepted, part of a team and make friends for life.”

Craig and Carrie have been running the club out of Douglas Morley Hall in Elm Road but hope this recognition could mean a move in thew future.

“We would love and appreciate any help to move into our own premises in Stonehouse, dedicated to boxing, training and helping people. This is particularly important to me, as I was born and raised here in Stonehouse".
