THREE Cainscross councillors have written to the owners of Tricorn House, demanding the site be developed after a 15-year-old boy died falling from the building’s roof.
Stroud District Councillors for the ward, Jessie Hoskin, Jenny Miles and Katrina Davis, have penned a joint open letter to owners Millville Ltd, saying that the delays to the building's development cannot continue.
The dilapidated former Department of Health and Social Security office, just off the Cainscross roundabout, has been empty for over two decades.
There have been many plans to redevelop the site over the years, but none have come to fruition.
Most recently, in 2009, the Government rejected a compulsory purchase order submitted by Stroud District Council which would have let them acquire Tricorn House from Millville Ltd and sell the space to Ecotricity.
Since the death of North Vernon-White in June, nearly 5,000 residents have signed a petition, asking for Tricorn House to be torn down.
Now the councillors have decided to speak directly to the owners in the hope of getting things moving.
The councillors' letter includes a link to the petition.
Here is their letter:
Dear Owners of Tricorn House
We, the ward Councillors for Cainscross write to bring to your attention the petition to have Tricorn House Demolished or Seriously Developed: www.change.org/p/the-government-get-tricorn-house-knocked-down
Residents of Cainscross and Stroud have, for in excess of 20 years been calling for Tricorn House to be made safe and brought back into use. We ask that you, the owners now act as a matter of urgency.
You will note that the petition is directed to the council, you will also know that the council does not have the power to act on this petition. We now direct it to you, the owners with sole power to develop the building.
The community has made it concerns about the safety of the building known for over 20 years and following the death of 15-year-old North, we now know that those concerns were not unfounded. Immediate action is now needed.
Almost 5,000 people have signed this petition. A young man has lost his life, Stroud deserved better than a derelict building and lack of action on planning consents. This cannot continue.
We stand with the community and ask that you work us, without any further delays to bring about the change that the residents of Stroud have repeatedly called for.
We look forward to hearing from you by the 30th of November 2021 to discuss your plans for Tricorn House.
Yours sincerely,
Cllr Jessie Hoskin
Cllr Jenny Miles
Cllr Trina Davis
