Standish and Nailsworth hospitals for wounded WW1 soldiers, with local historian Howard Beard.

During WWI hospitals were understandably unable to cope with the demands put on them by the huge number of wounded soldiers returning from France.

To deal with this problem extra capacity was provided by Red Cross hospitals, which were known as VAD – Voluntary Aid Detachment - hospitals.

The one at Stroud was housed in the Trinity Rooms and was covered in an article in the SNJ in November 2018.

The other two local institutions were at Nailsworth and Standish.

Staff in VAD hospitals generally consisted of a few medically trained personnel assisted by volunteer nurses, usually young women from relatively affluent backgrounds who could be spared to offer their services free.

Several photographs exist of staff and patients at Standish, while EP Conway photographed the smaller hospital at Chestnut Hill House in Nailsworth.
