CARS in the Stroud district have been targeted by thieves for their number plates.

A police alert issued today said that on five occasions this month number plates had been stolen.

The alert reads: "There has been an increase in number plate thefts in the Stroud District. We have received five incidents reported to us this month, and their may be more, which have gone unreported.

"Please can I urge you report it to us if your number plates are missing, as soon as you notice, please don't just assume they have fallen off.

"If you are missing your number plates, report it straight away to us on 101 or online.

"Reporting this will also help you avoid any unwanted embarrassment or questioning if your plates are involved in a crime, as well as avoiding any fines and tickets."

Police advise using 'anti-theft screws' on number plates and parking in well-lit areas.
