A FOOTBALL club in Stroud is on the brink of collapse – just one year before it is due to celebrate its 75th anniversary.

Members of Cashes Green FC have sent out a plea for players in a desperate bid to save the historic club.

At the moment the club’s adult first team squad – the only side left at the club – has 11 players committed before the new season.

Prominent members of the club - which plays in Stroud Division 3 - say they need at least four or five new players.

A failure to find new players within the next fortnight means the club will fold.

“It would be a real shame to lose this club, especially before next year’s potential 75th anniversary,” said vice-chair Clive Eckersall.

"We have had 10 or 11 players turn up to training but we need more.

“We are going to have to make a decision in the next two weeks.

“The next fortnight is the critical period.

"Even if we get just one or two new players then we have a chance.

“But there does come a point where if we can’t get any new players then the club is going to have to fold.

“There have been offers about merging with other clubs but we want to keep Cashes Green as the name.

“Our team plays matches on a Saturday afternoon – home fixtures are at Victory Park, Cainscross.

“The team is a fairly young side – we like to play good football.

“We are very happy with the players we already have, we just need a few more.

“In the past few years we have lost players to teams in higher divisions or they have decided to stop playing.

“The pandemic has not helped our cause either.

“We have got the facilities but not the players

"Cashes Green FC is a club with a lot of history.

"We also like to put on social activities for the players.

“At the turn of the century we did club tours to Blackpool and Bournemouth.

“We would love to get the club back to this stage, but first we need to save it."
