A MUCH-loved park has been nominated in a nationwide competition to find the UK’s favourite green spaces.

Marling's Close in King’s Stanley is one of the 364 parks and green spaces competing for the top spot in the scheme organised by the green space charity, Fields In Trust.

The park has a chance of winning the title of local or national favourite, but only if enough people cast their vote.

Pam Jenkinson, secretary of the Marling's Close Trust said: “The King's Stanley Marling's Trust playing field holds such an important place in our village and in the lives of our families.

“Trustees are so proud of the time they spend on the Trust and what we do to help keep this space available for current and future generations.”

“We’re up against some enormous parks so if you would take a couple of minutes to support us we would really appreciate it.

“We have just celebrated 100 years since the donation of the field to the village by Sir Samuel Marling and it would be wonderful to have the support of villagers and the local community for this award.”

The Close is home to the King's Stanley Cricket Club, which hosts youth cricket on Friday evenings,

During the winter, there is also an adult football team, and a youth football team will be formed soon.

The park also has play areas for toddlers and older children and outdoor fitness equipment for all ages.

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee was recently celebrated by residents of Kings Stanley village at a large lunch event held at Marling's Close.

Two other parks in Gloucestershire have also been nominated for the national award: Pittville Park in Cheltenham and Page Park in Staple Hill, South Gloucestershire.

If you would like to show your support for Marling's Close, you can vote online here or visit www.fieldsintrust.org

Voting closes at 12pm on Thursday August 18.
