Last weekend I meet up with friends and fellow members of the Royal British Legion where we were to spend the next three days riding 300km on push bikes on the RBL’s ‘Pedal to Ypres’ fundraising challenge with the end of day two reaching the Menin Gate at Ypres where so many names including from the Wiltshire Regiment are listed among the fallen from WW1.

I’m pleased to be able to report I broke the £1,000 barrier with my kind sponsors and the whole group raised over £50,000 to help fund the Legion’s valuable work.

The trip took us from Dunkirk and the scene of one of the most important victories snatched out of the jaws of defeat during the second world war, to the trenches of the first world war and the memorials both large and small and the stories of courage and loss.

The echoes of this past time seem all the more real now with the horrors in Ukraine.
