PLANS have been put forward for a new apartment block behind a house in Great Malvern.

The owner of 40 Priory Road wants to build a block of six flats in the back garden of the detached three-storey home.

According to a planning application submitted to Malvern Hills District Council, there are already a number of small, single storey outbuildings around the site.

The main property is opposite The Church of Our Lady and St Edmund and the Lindsay Arts Centre.

It sits between two Victorian houses in Priory Road and also borders the Priory Court flats.

Planning documents state that feedback from a previous application has been considered and the proposed building is now two storeys rather than three.

“The site would be largely hidden from the public realm due to its location to the rear of the three-storey building at Priory Road and the land level, which decreases towards the rear of the building,” the planning statement says.

“The submitted plans show that six car parking spaces will be provided and this equates to one space per apartment.

“These spaces are set to the rear of the site. In addition, lockable cycle storage is provided on the site.”

A neighbour has raised concerns over the impact of the proposed building on parking, traffic and house prices.

Objecting to the proposal, Bronach Grewal said: “The infrastructure is not set up to take on additional traffic on both Priory Road and on the Court area.

“Being a new resident I am very disappointed with this proposed development impacting the tranquil peace and beauty of the area, land and views. And this will impact on the property value too.”

The South Worcestershire Land Drainage Partnership, responding to the consultation, raises concern there is a “lack of a viable means of disposal for surface water” and recommends the proposals be refused or deferred.
