A new temporary car park is hoped to alleviate parking issues on roads around the university.

The car park will be created when the former Bredon Building at the University of Worcester’s St John’s Campus is demolished in May.

Some of the land will be used to form 59 new parking spaces, although the spaces will not be formally marked out and the car park will not be lit.

Planning permission for the car park was granted by city planners this week.

The university wants to use the site as a car park for five years while it works on proposals for a more permanent replacement for the building being knocked down.

Plans for the car park had been met with mixed reactions from neighbours but there is hope the car park will reduce the number of vehicles parked on roads around St John’s.

Barry Hillyard said: “I trust the university will encourage their staff, students and visitors to use this new facility before parking in residential roads.

“During the university term on weekdays it is almost impossible to find a parking space on Windsor Avenue or Laugherne Road, hence we and our visitors often cannot park anywhere near our home.

“It is very inconvenient and frustrating.”

Neil Collins said: “Residents suffer considerable disruption from on-pavement parking and drivers leaving their vehicles to block side streets in the area and those who park on double and single yellow lines.”

Residents said they were happy the plans included a “buffer zone” of green space on the former nursery plot.

But more than one raised concerns about the levels of noise and dust that would be created from work taking place in May.

Thomas Clark said it was a “ludicrous” time of year to carry out the work as the residents of Comer Gardens will be wanting to spend time in their gardens, which face the Bredon Building.
