THE RACE is on to save a much-loved community hub which is at risk unless vital funds can be raised to secure its future.

The Exchange in Stroud, a co-working space and venue on Brick Row, is the focus of a community buyout campaign led by Stroud Common Wealth (SCW), which is seeking to raise £350,000 to purchase the building’s freehold before its lease expires in July 2027.

The campaign is backed by a community share offer, which has now been extended to October 31, 2026, with the minimum investment lowered to £250 to encourage wider participation.

The Exchange has operated as a co-working space and meeting hub since 2007, supporting small businesses, charities and community groups.

Simon Opher, MP for Stroud, said: "Every step we take as a community to take control of our assets protects vital services and helps keep our wealth where it matters most — locally."

Aurelia St Clair, hub manager, said: "The Exchange is thriving as both a business and a resource for Stroud.

"Our workspaces are almost always full, our meeting rooms are in constant demand and we now want to buy the freehold so The Exchange can support local people long into the future."

The building, a former Victorian girls’ school, was refurbished by SCW after raising more than £300,000 and now stands as one of Stroud’s few fully wheelchair-accessible venues.

It also serves as a local pioneer in renewable energy technology.

The Exchange was officially opened by The Princess Royal in 2009, who has since sent her best wishes to SCW for its current efforts.

Long-term users of the hub have spoken out in support of the campaign.

Richard Lupo, of SHIFT Environment, said: "Basing SHIFT Environment at The Exchange has made great sense.

"All office admin is taken care of so we can focus on delivering our environmental work hassle free.

"The added bonus is that there are lots of like-minded businesses here which is great for informally bouncing ideas around."

SCW will hold its AGM at The Exchange on September 3 at 12pm.
