FRINGE Festival reveller Richard Butler was ordered to pay compensation to two female police officers who he verbally abused and assaulted at Stroud Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, September 28.

Butler, aged 23, of Yew Tree Way, Thrupp, pleaded guilty to one charge of using alarming behaviour and two of assault.

Kim James, prosecuting, said Butler appeared to be shouting at members of the public during Stroud Fringe Festival on Saturday September 3 and officers told him to go on his way.

But he continued to shout.

He swore at one officer and made degrading and lewd comments.

The officer also received a scratch across her forehead while trying to handcuff him, the court heard.

A second female officer received a blow to the back of her head while trying to help.

Malcolm Perry, for the defence, said his client was ashamed of his behaviour and had expressed his apologies to the officers.

Butler was ordered to pay £25 compensation to each officer plus a £100 fine for each assault.

He was also fined £50 for using alarming behaviour and must pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
