Hilltop Gardening Club AGM

ON AN evening when snow was forecast a cheerful group of gardeners assembled for their Annual General Meeting in Eastcombe Village Hall.

An AGM is not the most exciting meeting to attend but attendance was encouraged by the availability of wine and nibbles.

The AGM was followed by “Gardeners’ Question Time.”

Before the meeting got underway, the chairman had to report the sad death of Janet Martin who died after a fall down her stairs.

She was a good supporter of the club, she organised coach trips for us and also put up all our publicity notices.

She will be sorely missed.

Another member, Margaret Edmunds, also died last week.

She always attended meetings until the last few months.

She was probably one of the most knowledgeable members of our club, she always knew the Latin names of plants.

The usual reports were given which indicated the club was thriving and our programme secretary, Jane Randall outlined her plans for 2018/19.

This includes a visit to the RHS show in Cardiff, one to Croome Park and a full programmed of talks.

There is also a tour of gardens in West Wales.

The reports were accepted.

Diana Rosenberg, Jenny Fenyoe and Margaret Headen were stepping down from the committee.

They were thanked for all the work they have done for the club over a number of years.

Jenny Exley has been co-opted on to the committee to replace Diana Rosenberg and Natalie Beswetherick is taking over the organization of the NGS Open Gardens.

After the interval a panel of three knowledgeable gardeners answered questions put forward by the members.

Robert Bryant, Stella Martin and Jerry Raikes helped people to solve their problems, whether it was what to do about an under performing Cox’s apple tree, neighbour’s chickens in the garden, pruning a fig tree or choosing a shrub for a border of builders’ rubble.

Our thanks were expressed to our panel and we exited the hall to find our cars covered in snow!
