AS WE head to Christmas and a festive get-together for our last WI meeting of the year, Woodchester WI can reflect on a busy last quarter of 2018.

In October, Norah Kennedy gave us a fascinating talk on the history of willow production and basket weaving, whilst crafting a beautiful basket before our eyes; it became a much coveted raffle prize.

Then in November, a well-attended AGM was followed by an evening of song and entertainment by The Piano Man.

We just did not realise that we have the makings of an Abba Tribute Band amongst our members….watch this space!

A number of our members joined other Gloucestershire WI members at the Federation’s Christmas Concert last week at Cheltenham Town Hall, where we were delighted to see two of our members perform in the GFWI Choir alongside Only Men Aloud.

Our Craft Group have enjoyed its last session until next year, and the Book Group met to discuss Penelope Lively’s Consequences.

This novel was enjoyed by all and prompted much discussion.

We next meet in February to discuss E. M. Forster’s classic, A Passage to India.

As we head into 2019, our new WI programme includes a number of old favourites, but also an opportunity to experience something different too.

We kick off with The Isles of Scilly on January 17, but during the year will learn more about the local canal restoration project and female stars of the musical hall to name just two of the subjects included.

In addition, as the Gloucestershire Federation of Women Institutes celebrates its Centenary in 2019 we have a number of extra special events to look forward to, including a Centenary Exhibition at Gloucester Cathedral.

If you are looking for something new to get involved with in 2019, please think about coming along and joining our happy, friendly group.

Our next WI meeting is on Thursday, January 17, at Woodchester Village Hall (7.30pm) or email me, Angela (angela.j.pryor@gmail.com).

We look forward to meeting you.
