Upton St Leonards WI with The fear and phobia of water

OUR president Lynne Cook welcomed all members to our first meeting of 2019 and wished everyone a happy new year with a special welcome to our visitor, Theresa.

Business was brief as Lynne mentioned the painting and photography competition for GFWI Centenary Celebrations in October.

Our lunch club meet at The Swan, Coombe Hill on January 22.

Judy is holding a workshop on Thursday, April 4.

A reminder of Upton Spring Show on March 30.

We have an outing to Kew Gardens on May 14, spaces still available.

A decision had been taken to cancel the table top sale in March.

Our new year programme opened with a talk and demonstration on The fear and phobia of water by Ian Rampton.

After serving 17 years in the RAF as an all round sportsman Ian enjoyed basketball, badminton, running, water polo but his greatest love was swimming.

Gaining knowledge in all sports by teaching, coaching, umpiring and volunteering spurred him on to use his skills to coach others, especially those with a fear of water.

Ian is very keen to teach in schools or on a one to one basis.

Kathy volunteered to demonstrate and somehow managed to breathe correctly under water, much to members amusement.

Questions were asked and answered.

A warm round of applause was followed by a vote of thanks from Marlene.

Our next meeting is Monday, February 4, at 7.30pm when our speaker, Ian Caskie, will give us a talk on SS Gt Britain - Launch to re-launch.
