Woodchester WI with a talk on the Isles of Scilly
IT WAS more a case of an ‘Escape to the Ocean’ than an ‘Escape to the Country’ at January’s Woodchester WI meeting when we invited Brian Bailey to come to speak about the Isles of Scilly.
We expected to learn about these islands, their beaches and the flora and fauna, and with Brian’s photographs and informative account we were not disappointed.
What we didn’t expect however, was the story of his own family’s association with these islands.
Their six years spent on St Agnes in the 1970s in the pre-running water, pre-electric and pre-television days gave us a wonderful insight into Scillonian life pre-mass tourism when the daffodil industry, which we all associate with these islands, was at its height.
A most interesting and enjoyable meeting.
In February we aim to get crafting.
Our monthly meeting on Thursday, February 21, at 7.30pm, will be a craft evening, led by Ali Harris, and our craft group will meet on Thursday, February 7, from 2-4pm.
Folk bring along their own craft project, and tea and cake make a welcome appearance.
Both meetings are at Woodchester Village Hall.
We love to welcome new members to our friendly group, so don’t sit at home alone during these long winter months; come along and join us.
Either come along to one of the meetings or email Angela (angela.j.pryor@gmail.com).
