A new style of rose with Randwick Gardening Club

RANDWICK Gardening Club held the first meeting of 2019 in the village hall on Tuesday, March 12.

The meeting was opened by the chairman Mr Stuart Gregory who welcomed everybody, and thanked Mrs Marion Humphreys for arranging the speakers for the year.

Miss Ann Adams then gave details of this years day trips.

The chairman then asked if anyone would consider representing the club on the Randwick Village Hall committee.

The speaker for the evening was Mr M Read whose talk was David Austin - A new style of rose.

The many photographs taken at the David Austin centre illustrated the various stages of production.

David Austin senior [1926-2018] liked old roses and not single flowering ones.

He therefore strived to develop repeat flowering roses.

It takes seven to eight years to produce a new rose starting with cross pollinating, producing 250,000 seedlings to budding up in the field.

He was very particular and many not to his satisfaction are destroyed.

The raffle was won by Desi, Monica, Mary, Judith and Marion.

The first trip this year is to Ralph Court Gardens and Webbs of Wychbold on Thursday, May 23, cost £23.

Anyone interested in going please contact Miss Ann Adams on 01453 758353 or Mrs Betty Clark on 01453-751796.
