GERRY BRUTON, a club stalwart for years, led home the 128-strong field in part one of the mixed Fur & Feather Stableford competition at Cirencester Golf Club in benign conditions on Saturday, writes Danny Hall.

Bruton put together a rock steady round for 40 points but it was his 11 points over the last four holes, including a birdie on the 16th, which just allowed him to pip Dan Gregory (40) on countback.

Nine-handicapper Bruton, aged 77, had his handicap cut by a shot.

“I scored a gross 76 in the event, which was the sixth time this season I have scored under my age,” said a delighted Bruton.

Andy Morris won Division Three with 39 points for third place overall and Gloucestershire county player Jess Brown was the first lady home with 39 points off her five handicap.

Fourteen players recorded birdie twos, with Jamie Attwood gaining two of them at the 2nd and 13th holes.

RESULTS

Division One: Gerry Bruton (40 points): Dan Gregory (40); Jess Brown (39).

Division Two: Pete Shepherd (39); Alan Hughes (37); Kerry Lewis (37).

Tovey Cup

STEVE BISHOP, the 2018 club champion, added another piece of silverware to his season, when winning the Tovey Cup knockout competition final after an epic contest with Ian Gough.

The match went to extra holes when Bishop and Gough could not be separated and ‘Bish’ birdied the 19th hole to force a half and keep the final alive.

He then scored a birdie on the second extra hole to win the trophy.

Midweek Medal

JUST eight players turned out for the October Midweek Medal with Mark Foster posting both the best gross of 75 – off his handicap of two – which gave him victory with a nett 73.

Seniors’ Section

KEITH HODGSON, the 2018 seniors’ captain, presented a cheque for £750 to David Soar for the club captain’s chosen charity, the British Heart Foundation. Also at the seniors’ AGM, he presented a cheque for £1,865 to Gordon Robbins who received it on behalf of Acorns, a Gloucestershire-based charity for life-limited and life-threatened children.

Keith awarded the Whitbread Trophy for his Golfer of the Year to Mike Brown for his work on the seniors’ committee.

All seniors are invited to join with Peter Gillman on October 31 at 12.30pm to celebrate his 90th birthday in the James Braid Room.

Peter has been a member at Cirencester for very many years and has contributed enormously to the club in that time.
