Shortwood 1

Odd Down 4

After a promising first half performance, Shortwood gaining their first point of the season looked like a distinct possibility, but a difficult second half gave Odd Down a comfortable victory.

It was an even game from the start, with both sides creating a number of half chances.

Jacob Nowell saw his free kick tipped over the bar by George Dorrington after ten minutes, before a back-pass from Odd Down’s Jaiden Savery was miss-controlled by Dorrington, who recovered just before the ball trickled into his net.

With just under half an hour played, Nowell’s cross was poorly cleared and Ben Langworthy pounced on the loose ball, but his close range shot was well saved by Dorrington. The visitors opened the scoring in the thirty-eighth minute from a corner and Shortwood had had two prior warnings as both Adnan Hiroli and Lewis Dunn had come very close from corners already.

This time, when Adnan Hiroli’s delivery was met by Ollie Webb, whose header deflected in off the unfortunate Andreas Ali. Odd Down could have scored a second just three minutes later, but Brandon Benjamin’s shot was heroically blocked by Joe Tryner. Just before the break, Nowell’s free kick was headed across goal by Tom Hoskins to Jamie Walker, but he sliced his shot horribly wide from the edge of the six yard box.

Shortwood were unfortunate to go into half time behind as they arguably created better chances, but Odd Down had exposed a weakness when it came to defending corners.

Shortwood got off to a perfect start to the second half when the ever-dangerous Jack Gardner squared for Jamie Walker, who took his time before placing a low shot into the near bottom corner. Two minutes later, and just nine minutes into the second half, Odd Down took the lead again, this time through Brandon Benjamin, who outpaced Hoskins before sliding a shot past Harrison Veale.

The third came in the sixty-fifth minute after

Jaiden Savery’s high cross eventually to Josh Morgan-Williams, who fired a shot into the roof of the net from close range.

Nine minutes later, Morgan-Williams scored his second and Odd Down’s fourth as his weak shot was deflected in. The linesman raised his flag for offside, but the goal stood as the player in an offside position did not interfere with play.
