It was a disappointing night for Forest Green at the New Lawn on Wednesday against Arsenal Under 21s.

Here are five things we learned from Wednesday game.

Opportunities missed

A handful of fringe players were given their chance to stake a claim for a starting place and they blew it.

Ben Morris was making just his fourth Forest Green appearance and was ineffective for large parts of the game.

The likes of Ben Worthington and George Williams didn’t really do themselves any favours.

The only one who did, was James Montgomery.

Rovers weaker without Lloyd James and Reece Brown

This wasn’t Forest Green’s strongest line-up, but it proved how important Reece Brown and Lloyd James are to the team.

James brings a calming, controlling influence while Brown, who did play a cameo role on Wednesday, brings composure and creativity. They play such a key role in a vital part of the pitch.

Defensive dilemmas

Mark Cooper will have decisions to make at the back ahead the trip to Oxford. Does he stick with a back three or does he go back to a four?

If he goes to a four does he stick with Nathan McGinley and Gavin Gunning or does he bring Farrend Rawson back in?

Rovers have conceded five in their last two games. They’ve been solid all season at the back but individual mistakes have crept in too often recently.

Lack of depth could become a concern

Forest Green have a small squad of 20 players. Two are currently injured in Lee Collins and Liam Shephard.

A couple more injuries on top of that could be damaging, especially up front and at left back.

Cooper likes to work with a tight group but it’s a long hard season it shouldn’t be surprising if Rovers dip into the transfer market to add a bit more depth.

Willock looks Premier League quality

Joe Willock was the star of the show for Arsenal having scored two goals on the night. He was their driving force from midfield who controlled the game.

He’s skilful and has very quick feet which is why only six months ago he was playing for Arsenal’s first team at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
