Henbury’s Luke Derrick won his first Gloucester and Somerset PGA Medal of 2018 as he carded six birdies in his one under par round of 70 at Cleeve Hill.

He wasn’t alone at the top though as both David Dixon (Enmore Park) and Cirencester’s Ed Goodwin joined him on the winning number on a breezy but dry and warm day high above the town of Cheltenham.

Derrick opened with a birdie but a lost ball at the third saw him rack up a triple bogey 7.

He recovered superbly through what was the toughest stretch of the golf course on the day. Birdies came into the stiff breeze at the fourth, sixth and seventh taking him back into the red until his bogey at the ninth left him at level par at the turn.

His see-saw day continued as he dropped another stroke at the 13th but birdies at the 14th and 17th saw him home to victory and with it collecting the birdie sweep money.

For Goodwin it was his first win of the season as well on a course he knows well. The Cheltenham resident was the model of consistency as he had 2 birdies on his card and just one bogey. His shots were gained at the 3rd and 6th with only the tough 7th seeing him fail to match the par figure.

The third winning card was handed in by David Dixon despite him forgetting to bring a vital piece of his equipment with him to Gloucestershire, his putter! Luckily Cleeve Hill pro Dave Finch came to his rescue and lent him his for the day and Dixon used it to good effect to card 4 birdies alongside 3 bogies on his way to his second win of the campaign.

Martin Dewhurst took fourth on 72 ahead of last week’s winner Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow) who recovered from a disastrous start to finish 5th on 73. The final prize money was shared in 6th place between Andrew March (Brean), Ashley Mansell (Clevedon) and Daryl Kelley (Filton) on 74.

Despite Total Triumph Order of Merit leader Giuseppe Licata having a poor day by his high standards as he only tied for 10th he still extended his lead a little bit more but Goodwin moved up to second ahead of George Ryall who also had a day to forget.

Next week the Professional’s make a swift return to The Players Club as they tackle the Codrington layout at the Bristol course.
