JOAN Griffiths, president of Painswick Lawn Tennis Club received the richly deserved lifetime achievement award at the Gloucestershire Lawn Tennis Association’s (GLTA) awards dinner held recently at Brickhampton Golf Club.

Joan joined Painswick Club in 1994 and since then has been secretary, club captain, ladies captain followed by president since 2010.

Although Painswick is one of the largest tennis clubs in the county it still retains a warm, family atmosphere with opportunities for beginners, social and competitive tennis. Tennis is played all year with eight courts, six of which are floodlit at Broadham Fields by the rugby club and two unlit at the Recreation Ground.

Joan’s award also recognised her tireless work as chairman of the GLTA League committee which runs the county‘s summer leagues providing men's and ladies doubles; the Floodlit Winter league providing mixed doubles and the Over 60s league for mixed, men's and ladies doubles.

In addition, Joan jointly initiated the very successful Stroud Sunday morning league which has grown to 18 teams from local clubs.

For the last 15 years Joan has organised and catered for a ladies summer charity tournament which is enjoyed by over 35 ladies. The event raises about £450 a year which has been donated to Sue Ryder for the last eight years.
