Brimscombe 0
Longlevens 2

TWO long range stunners saw Brimscombe and Thrupp fall to a surprise home defeat against bottom club Longlevens in the Hellenic Premier Division on Tuesday night.

Dave Merrick scored either side of half time for Longlevens on a disappointing night for Brimscombe who's four game unbeaten run came to an end.

The game got off to a slow start. Longlevens had the first opportunity when Josh Westcarr's header forced a save out of Ashley Gale after seven minutes.

Brimscombe's first chance came on 20 minutes Jack Horrell found Jack Smith with space down the left and he stung the palms of Ash Wintle.

While the hosts were enjoying a lot of the ball, Longlevens looked the more dangerous and they took the lead after 29 minutes.

Isaac Jones showed brilliant pace as he burst through and fired in a shot at goal which was tipped behind for a corner. Brimscombe didn't deal with it very well and the ball fell to Merrick who unleashed a thunderbolt into the top corner from 30-yards-out giving Gale no chance. It was a goal of the season contender and even had Brimscombe supporters applauding.

Smith forced another save out of Wintle as Brimscombe tried to respond in the second half but eight minutes into the half Merrick got his second with a lovely strike from 25-yards out which went in off the post.

The hosts huffed and puffed as they tried to get themselves back into the game but in truth, Longlevens looked comfortable. Smith had a deflected shot late on while Karl Nash's controlled volley went wide but that was as close as they came.

Brimscombe boss Sam Prior was frustrated with his teams display and lack of consistency. He also admitted Longlevens were deserved winners on the night.

He said: "Better side won, we can't ague with that but we were dreadful. First touches, passing and ball retention - everything was dreadful.

"Our inconsistency on that level is why we probably won't go on to do what we want to do but the boys need to take a lot of the blame on the way they performed."
