Westbury 7 Purton 0
Wiltshire Senior Cup Quarter-Final
PURTON suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Western Premier Division high flyers Westbury United as they crashed out of the Wiltshire Senior Cup at the quarter finals stage on Wednesday night.
The scoreline was slightly harsh on Purton who gave a good account of themselves in the first half against higher opposition.
Westbury took the lead on 11 minutes when Dan Kovacs converted a penalty after Callum Demkiv was fouled.
Purton responded well and enjoyed a spell of possession but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
The hosts doubled their lead though on 39 minutes in somewhat fortuitous fashion when Ed Baldy’s wind assisted kick was terribly fluffed by Wells allowing Kovacs a tap in for his second of the evening.
Purton battled well in the second half but Westbury put themselves beyond their reach on 65 minutes when Ricky Hulbert powered a header into the top corner.
The visitors kept fighting and were unlucky not to get on the scoresheet when Mark Chatwin whose brilliant 30 piledriver crashed off the crossbar.
From that moment on it was one way traffic as Westbury showed no mercy.
Joe Stradling scored Wesbury's fourth before Kovacs completed his hat-trick to make it 5-0.
Purton ran out of steam in the final ten minutes and Stradling scored his second before a half-volley from Hulbert, who also got a brace, rounded off the scoring in the 87th minute.
Westbury will play one of Salisbury City, Swindon Supermarine or Laverstock & Ford in the semi-final.
