CHELTENHAM produced a tremendous fightback to complete a memorable first win since being promoted to Premier One of the Courage West of England Premier League, holding off Taunton St Andrews by six runs.

Saints were clear favourites for the spoils at 210-3, needing 236 for victory with plenty of overs in hand.

But that was the signal for Cheltenham to turn the game on its head as wickets started to fall and nerves tightened to conjure up a dramatic finale.

Luke Sellers led the way with a return of 4-43 with Liam Walker (3-28) and Gloucestershire’s Matt Taylor (2-31, all from ten) also keeping the pressure on.

Earlier, Cheltenham’s total owed much to opener Kieran Smith’s 115 off 133 (13 fours and a six) while there was also a crucial 50 from George Pritchard.

Downend, meanwhile, rallied from 26-3 to eventually total 309-8 away to previously unbeaten leaders Bath ahead of securing a 78-run victory.

Heroes for the visitors were Brandon Gilmour (121) and skipper Jordan Garrett who shared a stand of 191 while Matt Jackson also walloped a quick-fire 45 off only 27 balls.

Gilmour followed up with a return of 3-49 with Hamdi Saleem (3-41), Bobby Naeem (2-31) and Jackson (2-36) also striking.

Bedminster trumped Bridgwater by 86 runs to leapfrog their rivals and go second, Tom Price starring with a return of 6-13, while Bristol slipped to a six-wicket reverse at Potterne.

Gloucestershire captain Chris Dent top scored with 106 for Winterbourne who thumped North Perrott by nine wickets in Premier Two Bristol/Somerset, but Bishopston were beaten by seven wickets at home to Taunton Deane.

Frocester made it four in a row in Premier Two Glos/Wilts after overcoming Chippenham by six wickets, Alex Russell taking 4-37 and Will Naish plundering an unbeaten 85.

And Yvan Grant’s 97 not out from 71 balls (nine fours, six sixes) saw Thornbury to a two-wicket home success over Biddestone with two balls to spare.

Newcomers Stroud suffered a 250-run setback at Goatacre but Dumbleton were 41-run victors at Trowbridge.

Ghulam Shabbir hit 97 and then took 3-13 from ten in Stapleton’s 66-run away defeat of Timsbury in Bristol & North Somerset.

Bristol 2nds remain top despite suffering a first defeat, sliding by 25 runs in a low-scoring thriller at Frenchay.

Jack Baber (48) and skipper Ricardo Williams (4-24 from ten) shone for Bristol West Indian Phoenix who dispatched Knowle by 57 runs.

And an opening partnership of 97 between Richard Trotman (64) and skipper Mark Fowler (56 not) paved the way for Twyford House’s seven-wicket success at Brislington.

In the Gloucestershire division, captain Charlie Garratt’s unbeaten 97 powered Bourton Vale to an eight-wicket home victory in a rain-hit clash against Gloucester.

There were also wins for Painswick, Rockhampton and Tewkesbury.
