September Medal

GRAHAM CARTER bounced back from his Tovey Cup semi-final defeat to Charlie Buse to top the leaderboard in the September Medal on Sunday at Cirencester Golf Club.

In-form Graham was making it two competition wins in a fortnight as had been part of the successful team in the Bank Holiday Bowmaker. This time, however, he carried the burden alone with a sparkling nett 65 which prompted a two-shot handicap cut to 16.

“It was a very satisfying round,” said Graham. “I made a par, par, birdie start and managed to keep it going on the back, with a nice par on 18 to finish.”

Scott Hicks, who shot an astonishing 47 points to run away with the Captains’ Day stableford in July off a handicap of 10, continued his scintillating run by signing for a fine nett 66, but it has cost a further snip to 6, courtesy of an exceptional playing cut. Scott won Division One to finish second overall.

Alan Hughes, who faces Charlie Buse in the forthcoming Tovey Cup final, won Division Two on countback from Thomas Montgomery, the pair of them recording nett 67s.

Ten members holed out for birdie twos, two of them from Neil Little on the 2nd and 13th holes.

RESULTS

Division One: Scott Hicks (74-08=66); Nick Peare (73-04=69), Pete Stone (74-05=69); Dan Gregory (75-06=69).

Division Two: Alan Hughes (78-11=67); Tom Montgomery (78-11=67); Neil Little (82-13=69); Martin Righton (83-13=70).

Division Three: Graham Carter (83-18=65); Nico Brown (86-18=68); Nick Baker (91-23=68), Trevor Rowlands (93-24=69).

Pete Stibbs, who won the Goddard Cup having topped the leaderboard over four qualifying seniors’ stablefords

Goddard Cup

PETE STIBBS has won the season-long Goddard Cup for posting the best three scores in the four qualifying Senior Stablefords. The May competition was lost to the weather.

Pete put in another consistent display, high on the leaderboard, in the last comp which gained him a deserved success in the series.

His three scores to count were 36, 38, and 39 points for a total of 113.

He could not afford any slip-ups as Eamonn Cuthbert’s late charge got to within one point of the winner, his best scores being 33, 36 and 43 for 112.

Last year’s winner Andy Ponting put up a brave defence of the trophy ending up third on 106 (30, 37 and 39), while seniors’ captain David Lowbridge concluded his fine summer of golf on the same overall score for fourth place after a Faldo-esque 35, 35 and 36.
