Fur And Feather

FORMER club champion Darren Robison turned back the clock to take the Fur And Feather competition, traditionally the final mixed event in the calendar at Cirencester Golf Club, writes Danny Hall.

Darren’s golf was a lot warmer than the temperature as he went round in a sizzling gross 67 for a stableford score of 43 points.

The one-time Cirencester Town FC stalwart and three-handicapper dropped just one shot to par and built his success on two clusters of birdies at holes 6, 7 and 8 as well as the 15th and 16th.

Darren said: “67 was the lowest score of the year for me, the season has ended too soon!!

“I was just really steady all day, although I did hit two nice approaches on 6 & 15 to a foot which took the pressure off the putter.

“I was in a really good group and the pace of play was perfect which always helps.”

Mark Jameson followed him Darren home with a very respectable 41 points which featured his own back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17.

Completing the podium, and heading Division Two, was newly-appointed vice-president of the club for 2020, John Parsons, also on 41 points.

There were six birdie twos recorded: Chris Yeates and Andy Morris (2nd), Andrew Miles (9th), David Murray (11th), along with Andy Ponting and Howard Jones on the 13th.

The leading lady golfer was Muriel Telling with 33 points off her handicap of 20, which earned her 35th place overall.

RESULTS

Division One: Darren Robison (43 points off 3), Mark Jameson (41 off 6), Chris Yeates (38 off 8).

Division Two: John Parsons (41 off 11), Paul Godding (40 off 14), Howard Jones (39 off 14).

Division Three: Bob Hayward (40 off 16), Jack Bastow (37 off 25), Andy Morris (37 off 20).

November Bowmaker

WILTSHIRE Vets cricketer Dave Allen proved his sporting prowess stretches from the crease to the fairways when leading his team to victory in the latest Seniors’ Bowmaker on Wednesday.

He was partnered by Bob Allen (no relation) and Simon Byrne.

Dave, with a personal total of 45 stableford points, was the mainstay of the trio who posted the winning aggregate of 89 points – with two of three scores to count on each hole.

Rumours would have it that 17-handicapper Dave has been receiving regular advice from his son and fellow member Gavin. To partner Bob’s eyes, though, Dave has just gone back to doing what he does on the cricket field for Wiltshire – smacking the ball hard.

“Dave had 10 pars and a birdie two on the 13th – he could even afford to blob the 6th hole – and it is fair to say that Simon and I were bit-part players,” said Bob.

Early starters Dave Jones, Pat Waldron & Nigel Curtis, who smugly finished before the rain took hold, were runners-up on 88 points, with Nigel contributing three birdies, including two in the first three holes.

Ray Russell, Pete Shepherd & Phil Smith (86 points) pipped Mike Helyer, Dave Lowbridge & Mike Brown on countback for third place.

RESULTS

Dave Allen, Bob Allen & Simon Byrne 89 points; Dave Jones, Pat Waldron & Nigel Curtis 88; Ray Russell, Pete Shepherd & Phil Smith 86; Mike Helyer, Dave Lowbridge & Mike Brown 86.
