Electric land speed record holder Nick Ponting is set for an exciting comeback in motorsport.

The Stroud-based driver will compete in the BRSCC Mazda MX5 Championship in the opening rounds of the championship at Silverstone in March.

Ponting was previously behind the wheel of the Ecotricity Nemesis in 2012, smashing the electric land speed record previously held by Don Wales.

“It’s absolutely brilliant to be back,” said Ponting. “I’ve been out of the seat for a while now and been itching to get something done. Having had a little addition to the family, has been keeping me busy, but It seems like so many seasons have gone by without a drive and it was about time to change that.”

The championship which is run by the BRSCC, visits some of the top circuits across the UK, starting at Silverstone International March 21st & 22nd.

Speaking earlier this month at the Autosport International show, Ponting added: “This is the biggest one make championship in the UK and the racing is the most exciting you’ll see. Looking at previous seasons it looks like there will be a grid of over 50 cars which is crazy. Amongst them, there’s some super quick guys so I’ll need to get up to speed as quickly as I can.”

Ponting is no stranger to the Mazda MX5 Championship, after a competitive outing at Castle Combe in 2015.

“I was given a last-minute opportunity to race at Castle Combe a few years ago in this championship which went pretty well.

“That deal was announced about 2 weeks before the event, so it’s nice to have this done a little earlier to give me a bit of time to prepare and put on a good show for my partners.”

The BRSCC Mazda championship visits Silverstone International in March 21/22.
