NEWPORT County striker Padraig Amond will miss Tuesday night’s Leasing.com Trophy quarter-final after suffering a “bizarre” injury while getting ready for his side’s clash with Swindon Town.

Amond didn’t feature in boss Michael Flynn’s matchday squad on Saturday, with the Rodney Parade faithful left scratching their heads when his name failed to appear in the Exiles’ line-up.

Speaking after Josh Sheehan and Jamille Matt struck to give County a 2-0 victory over the League Two leaders, Newport supremo Flynn revealed what had happened to the Irishman in the build-up.

“He’s not fit,” said the manager. “He’s got a slight injury. I’m hoping he’ll be alright for Saturday (when County travel to Leyton Orient).

“It’s nothing serious. He just felt his hip flexor when taking his boot off – the most bizarre thing ever.

“He won’t be ready for Tuesday, or I won’t be risking him on Tuesday, put it that way.”

Flynn also admitted after seeing his men complete a league double over the Robins that the state of the Rodney Parade pitch played a part in his selection for the encounter.

The match took place less than 24 hours after the Dragons’ European Challenge Cup game against Russian outfit Enisei-STM.

A very sandy and bobbly surface wasn’t conducive to free-flowing football on Saturday, but it was County who coped the better with the conditions and deservedly took the spoils.

“It was a factor with one or two players,” said Flynn about the pitch.

“There were one or two who didn’t play but might have if the pitch was better.

“But it’s horses for courses, and I compliment my coaching staff for that, and the players because they’ve taken it in the right way.”

Meanwhile, the Amond incident happened on the same day it was confirmed that Wales international Joe Ledley had been training with County.

“He’s training and he’ll be in on Monday, I’ll speak to him then, but that’s it,” added Flynn. “That’s all I know.

“They’re a great group and don’t care who comes in. They don’t care what level they’re from or where they’ve been, they don’t want to lose their shirt.

“They treat them well, make them welcome, and that’s about as far as it goes.”

Ledley, a free agent, wants to find a club closer to his Cardiff home and has not ruled out a move to Rodney Parade.
