Forest Green Rovers' campaign is set to end after League Two clubs agreed to an early end to the regular season.

Rovers were last in action on March 7 when they rocked table-topping Swindon Town winning 2-0 at the County Ground and had 10 fixtures left when the English Football League suspended play because of the coronavirus pandemic.

FGR sat 11th in the table, 9 points away from repeating their 2019 qualification for the play-offs, but will not be able to make a late charge.

Clubs held an indicative vote to cancel the rest of the regular season with the decision, along with the method of finalising the standings, needing to be ratified by the EFL and Football Association.

A spokesman for the EFL said: "The EFL Board, whose aspiration has always been to conclude the 2019/20 season by completing the remaining fixtures, has previously stated that any decision on how to conclude the season is a matter for clubs to determine in their respective divisions and, as a result of today’s discussions, the following update can be provided.

"Having considered the protocols and costs that would be required to be met to conclude the current season, League Two clubs have unanimously indicated a preferred direction of travel to curtail the campaign in line with the framework outlined by the EFL Board.

"In addition, clubs asked for consideration to be given to suspending relegation to the National League for 2019/20 as a result of circumstances created where fixtures cannot be completed.

"No commitments were made in this respect and the board will now consider the implications of the division’s preferred approach at their next meeting."

The final table looks likely to be decided by a point-per-game method – using a weighted system to even out home and away fixtures - with plans for the play-offs to take place as usual, with two-legged semi-finals and a final for a place in League One.

Crewe, Swindon and Plymouth would go up automatically while the play-offs would be contested by Exeter, Cheltenham, Colchester and Northampton.

It has also been proposed that no team will drop down from League Two to the National League.

Stevenage are currently bottom of the table while it is expected that Barrow will be promoted to the EFL after the demise of Bury.

Forest Green chairman Dale Vince said the club will accept the decision, but believes the decision itself is premature.

He said: "Big news just now is that League Two may be allowed by the EFL to vote on ending the 19/20 season, prematurely - with 10 games to go.

"I think the decision itself is premature, the background is moving fast, the Bundesliga are just starting to play out their season and a new breakthrough in testing was announced only this week - we don’t have to decide now if this is possible.

"But that appears to be where most clubs in L2 are at - we’ll accept that of course if it goes to a vote next - it’s democratic.

"But it’s inconsistent of clubs in L2 to suggest to the EFL that there should be no relegation this season because we’ve been unable to play the last 10 games and at the same time expect there to be promotion in the exact same circumstance. That's hypocritical in my view.

"If we call the season based on where we all sit when the music stops - that should apply top and bottom."
